Question by Straightforward: Do you believe you must love yourself before you can love others?
This is something that I hear frequently and peaks my interest. I disagree, as I have had friends who view themselves as the scum of the earth but love others wholeheartedly. I also do not love myself (though I am confident enough) but love my family and friends immensely. Do you agree that one must love them self first? If so, why?

that’s some lame excuse that people use as an excuse for breaking up with someone who has low self-esteem and is afraid of what they’re reaction is.

because if you don’t love yourself then you wont accept love from others. and if you don’t accept their love then you can’t truly love them. does that make sense? like someone who hates themselves wont accept any compliments, so how are they supposed to compliment people if they wont allow others to do it back? people will just see them as rude.

No not necessarily. A person could love someone else so much and lose sight of how much they should really love themselves.

yes i believe you have to love yourself first before loving others. because then you will respect yourself and know whats best for you. you will also not let others use you or treat you in a certain way you dont like.

I disagree.
You must love yourself before OTHERS can love you.

I dont believe that if you hate yourself and love someone else that it is love….i believe it to be more of an obsession honestly. because when that person leaves you…all of a sudden you want to kill yourself or die??? hmmm i think you have to love yourself to be in a healthy relationship

It depends on the kind of situation the person is in. People who have never loved themselves do have trouble loving others if they feel undeserving or detached. I don’t like myself, but I do love my family and friends.

I think it applies to people who haven’t known love growing up, that have trouble loving the people important to them later in life.

As i’m a Christian, i believe ppl must know they are loved to be able to love themselves and others well. You can’t give what you don’t have.

You must have a healthy self love to have healthy relationships with others.

For example, if a person has no self esteem and thinks they are the “scum of the earth” as you put it, they may allow themselves to be treated like doormats, or if they have children, they can become literally like their servants, which can result in spoiled ungrateful adults who will expect to be catered to. The person who loves like that may not take time to care for their own needs and wishes, and it will teach the next generation a warped sense of love.

It can create dysfunctional families when people love others very strongly, yet have no love for themselves.

Both are true in a way! There are people who don’t care much about themselves, but can love others unselfishly and there are some who love others as much as they love them! The truth is LOVE is present in all of us. Not always is ‘Not loving yourself’ the same as hating yourself. Sometimes, we need to forget about ourselves for a while and think of others. You will find this trait in the ‘coolest and unselfish’ type of people.
It’s all about attitudes!

I don’t.
I have all sorts of problems w/ myself.
A lot of those problems are BECAUSE I’m so in love w/ someone.
Loooooooooong story.
But, the short story?
No.
Love has nothing to do w/ how you feel about yourself.
I mean, you don’t need to hate yourself in order to hate others, do you?
You don’t need to be jealous of yourself in order to be jealous of others, do you?
Love is a feeling, an emotion.
I don’t think it has anything to do about your thoughts toward yourself.
Because no one loves themselves 100%, I don’t think.
Everyone has SOMETHING they don’t like about themselves.
I mean, it’s human!
Even if they pretend they don’t, there’s always something.
